NEW YORK — For her excellence in writing and storytelling, communications director Jocelyn Thomas has been awarded several honors from the Religion Communicators Council and the Catholic Press Association.

Her story “Collaborative Breakfast a Hit with Breadline Guests,” which focused on the new hot meal program available to guests of the St. Francis Breadline in New York City, won recognition from both organizations. The RCC gave the story an “Award of Merit,” while the Catholic Press Association awarded it second place in its “Best Feature Article (Newsletter)” category.

“The story puts readers right in the middle of a hopeful and empowered service community,” wrote the judges. “It benefits from candid images and compelling quotes.”

Thomas also received third place in the same CPA category for her story titled “Friars Settle into New Florida Community,” which featured the new fraternity in Orlando. The judges remarked that the story “introduces readers to a community of friars who are facing change with a positive and hopeful attitude.”

The Province congratulates Thomas for her achievements and thanks her for her continued commitment to sharing the Franciscan message.

Also recognized by the CPA was Provincial Minister Fr. Thomas Nairn, OFM, of Sacred Heart Province. Fr. Tom received honorable mention for his piece “Building Virtues in Life Leads to ‘Good Death,” which appeared in Health Process magazine in the “Best Special Issue, Section or Supplement.”

Maria Hayes is communications coordinator for Holy Name Province.
