Bishop John Burke Dies Suddenly

Most Reverend John J. Burke, OFM, bishop of Miracema do Tocantins, Brazil, an alumnus of Holy Name Province, died March 14 in Brazil, during surgery to stop massive internal bleeding. John would have been 71 years of age on March 16. He has been a professed Franciscan friar for 50 years, a priest for 45 years, and a Bbishop for 10 years. John would have celebrated his 11th anniversary of ordination to the episcopate on March 25.

Bernardine Ward Dies at 93

Bernardine Ward, 93 years of age, a professed Franciscan Friar for 68 years and a priest for 63 years, died on Feb. 25 at Holy Name Friary, Ringwood, N.J.

HNP Statement on Vocational Discernment and Sexuality

Several months ago, on Nov. 29, the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education issued an instruction on "the criteria for the discernment of vocations with regard to persons with homosexual tendencies." The Provincial Administration believes that it is important for Holy Name Province to enunciate its own policy on this issue and so has issued this statement.
