OAKLAND, Calif. — The Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley, Calif., operated by St. Barbara Province based in Oakland, is offering a course this summer in “Creation, Humanity and Science in the Franciscan Intellectual Tradition” at its Old Mission Santa Barbara.

The July 30 to August 10 program features several widely known Franciscan speakers: Br. William Short, OFM, academic dean of the Franciscan School, Sr. Mary Beth Ingham, CSJ, an expert on John Duns Scotus and a frequent presenter, and Fr. Keith Warner, OFM, a leading care-for-creation scholar. The course explores the Franciscan intellectual tradition that encourages care for the environment today.

The retreat is meant to “draw from a rich theology of creation, a vision for a just society, philosophy of science, and environmental ethics,” according to the May issue of Pacific Currents, the newsletter of St. Barbara Province.

While open to all, the course is especially appropriate for people serving in leadership capacities at y Franciscan institutions, those teaching science, theology, religion or philosophy, ministries that use science or creation; and individuals on their own spiritual journeys, according to the newsletter, which can be subscribed to online or by sending an email to Franciscanfriars@sbofm.org.

This residential program costs $2,000, and includes room and board for 12 days, 10 days of class instruction, and books. Continuing education credit through the University of San Diego can be arranged for an additional fee. Information is available from Fr. Franklin Fong, OFM, ffong@fst.edu, or 510-848-5232.
