ALLEGANY, N.Y. — The Diocese of Buffalo recently presented 45 people with the Lay Award of St. Joseph the Worker. Recipients, including two volunteers from St. Bonaventure Parish were honored for their service at a church or other diocesan ministry.

Judy Pastore, St. Bonaventure’s organist for 28 years, and Edye Butchello, involved in the parish’s music ministry for 43 years, “were recognized for their zealous and loyal service to the parish’s liturgical ministry,” said pastor James Vacco, OFM.

On April 29, honorees were welcomed at a special Mass celebrated by Bishop Edward Kmiec at St. Joseph Cathedral, followed by a reception.

James also said the parish raised more than $2,100 during Lent for a donation to The Warming House, the student-run soup kitchen of nearby St. Bonaventure University.

The Allegany church’s “Meat the Need” program asked parishioners to make a sacrifice during Lent by saving the money they would normally spend on luxury food items. The funds collected on Palm Sunday were donated to purchase meat for The Warming House. Envelopes containing $2,119.09 were placed in baskets in front of the altar.
