HNP Communications Franciscan World

FRANKLIN, Wis. — The July 24 newsletter of the Assumption BVM Provincebased here cautions friars to take care of their skin when out in the summer sun.

It reminds readers that while a tan can be considered a sign of a good appearance, it is actually sun damage. The article encourages friars to use sunscreen and avoid the sun during its peak hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In addition to health tips, the newsletter discussed how to grow old gracefully. Friars are invited to attend an interprovincial elder retreat scheduled for Nov. 9 to 13 at St. Francis Hall at San Pedro Center in Winter Park, Fla. The retreat will explore how growing old gracefully is a Christian, Franciscan and human process.

The retreat features Frs. Dismas Bonner, OFM, and David Crank, OFM. The registration deadline is Oct. 30, and its cost is $450, including meals and snacks.

The newsletter also discussed dying gracefully, referencing an article in The New York Times about how theSisters of St. Joseph in New York State embrace their mortality with dignity and reverence.

The newsletter also discussed a recent retreat attended by the Assumption Province Definitorium, the transitions of several friars and a ministry opportunity for a spiritual assistant.

The Aug. 22 Provincial Newsletter included a story about the annual meeting of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men (CMSM) held Aug 5 to 8 in St. Louis.
