Fr. John Felice, OFM
1996 – 2005
Fr. John M. Felice, OFM, a native of Patchogue, N.Y., attended St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, N.Y., where he met the Franciscan friars and decided to enroll at St. Joseph Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y.
Fr. John was received into the Province’s novitiate at St. Raphael’s Friary in Lafayette, N.J., in 1962, professing his first vows in 1963 and solemn vows in 1966. In 1968, Fr. John was ordained a priest at the Franciscan Monastery in Washington, D.C.
Since completing his theological studies in 1969, he has served at St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York City in various capacities, where he has achieved success because of his charism, vision, and deep-rooted faith in the Franciscan way of life, ministering to all.
During his early years, Fr. John served in the Province’s Vocation Office. Then, in 1973, he was appointed guardian and pastor of St. Francis, serving three consecutive terms. From 1976 through 1982, he also served two terms on the Provincial Council.
In 1980, he co-founded St. Francis Friends of the Poor, a ministry that provides housing in New York for the mentally ill, with fellow HNP friars Fr. John McVean, OFM, and Fr. Thomas Walters, OFM. Fr. John served as SFFP’s president until the summer of 2016.
In 1996, he was elected Provincial Minister of Holy Name Province. He was re-elected in 2002 to serve a second term of three years. During his administration, the Province accepted the care of Immaculate Conception Parish in Durham, N.C. and re-emphasized the priority of fraternal life.
Today, Fr. John continues to work at the three St. Francis Friends of the Poor residences, one of which celebrated its 25th anniversary in June 2009.
