Deceased Friars
Wilfrid Hughes, OFM

1900 – 1967
Fr. Wilfrid Hughes, OFM, was born Jan. 11, 1900 in Harrison, N.J. He entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1921 and professed temporary vows one yar later. Fr. Wilfrid made his solemn profession in 1925 and was ordained in 1928.
A serious car accident shortly after his ordination left Fr. Wilfrid with injuries that plagued him throughout his life. He ministered in Brookline, Mass., Paterson, Asheville, N.C., and New York City. His kindness and practical judgment made him a popular confessor at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in New York City. In 1949, he was assigned to St. Patrick’s Parish in Buffalo, N.Y., and he served as confessor to sisters in large motherhouses in the area.
He died on April 24, 1967 in Buffalo. Fr. Wilfrid was 67 years old, a professed friar for 44 years and a priest for 38 years.
