Warren Louth

1921 – 1994

Fr. Warren Louth, OFM, was born in West New York, N.J., on Aug. 12, 1921. He attended St. Joseph’s School in West New York and after graduation joined the United States Air Force. He served as a mechanic with the Air Force for three years.

After leaving the Air Force, he enrolled at Seton Hall University, where he studied for two years before entering St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y. Fr. Warren was received into the Province’s novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., on his 29th birthday, Aug. 12, 1950.

He professed his temporary vows Aug. 13, 1951, and made his profession of solemn vows Aug. 13, 1954. Fr. Warren was ordained a priest June 11, 1956.

His first assignment was to Holy Name Parish in Garfield, N.J., as an assistant. In 1964 he was appointed pastor of Holy Name and served for 12 years. He then went to St. Elizabeth’s in Wyckoff, N.J., as pastor, where he garnered the same respect and love of the people.

After a year at Darlington Seminary for continuing education, Fr. Warren served at New Jersey parishes Our Lady of the Angels in Little Falls and Sacred Heart in Rochelle Park. He was then appointed pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Atlanta, Ga.

During his final years, Fr. Warren served as regional spiritual assistant to the Secular Franciscans in the South. He loved the company of friars and people, and during his entire life, he was a model of Franciscan hospitality. His friary door was always open to friars and laity, and his human touch brought many back to the Church.

Fr. Warren was a gentle friar and a great pastoral priest who left his mark on all who met him. He died at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla, on July 11, 1994, after a serious operation. He was 72 years old, a professed friar for 42 years and a priest for 38 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
