Vincent J. McCann, OFM

1912 – 2002
Fr. Vincent McCann, OFM, was born May 27, 1912 in Passaic, N.J. He entered St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y., and was received into the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1933 and given the name Garald. He professed simple vows one year later, made his solemn profession in 1937 and was ordained in 1941.
After serving two years at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Fr. Vincent went to St. Anthony Parish, Butler, N.J., from 1943 to 1948. He then traveled to Brazil as a missionary before returning to the United States to minister at St. Patrick’s Parish in Buffalo, N.Y. Fr. Vincent served briefly at Immaculate Conception Parish in Atlanta before a five-year stint at St. Leo’s Parish, Elmwood Park, N.J. Fr. Vincent served for one year each at St. Francis of Xavier Parish in Narrowsburg, N.Y., and St. Francis Chapel, Providence, R.I. From 1964 to 1972, he ministered at Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Garfield, N.J.
Fr. Vincent withdrew from the Order in 1973 and was received back in 1988. Ten years later, he retired to St. Anthony Friary, St. Petersburg, Fla., and in 2001, he transferred to Holy Name Friary, Ringwood, N.J.
He died there on April 5, 2002. Fr. Vincent was 89 years old, a professed friar for 64 years and a priest for 60 years.
