Viator Taprahanian

1904 – 1934

Fr. Viator Taprahanian, OFM, was born Feb. 11, 1904 in Paterson, N.J. After graduation from St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y., he entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1922. He professed temporary vows one year later, made his solemn profession in 1926 and was ordained in 1929.

He volunteered to go to China as a missionary and was sent to St. Anthony College in Rome to prepare for his work. Soon after, he contracted a serious illness and died in Villa Concordia Hospital in Davos-Dorf, Switzerland on April 5, 1934. Fr. Viator was 30 years old, a professed friar for 10 years and a priest for four years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
