Urban Scanlon

1898 – 1959

Fr. Urban Scanlon, OFM, was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on Nov. 30, 1898. After graduating from St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y., he was received into the Province’s novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., Aug. 7, 1918. He professed temporary vows Aug. 11, 1919, and made his profession of solemn vows Aug. 11, 1922. Fr. Urban was ordained a priest June 7, 1925, in Buffalo, N.Y.

His first assignment was to St. Bonaventure Friary, from which he cared for St. Clare’s Church in Delawanna, N.J., for 10 years.

In 1937, Fr. Urban became vicar of St. Joseph Friary in Winsted, Conn., and then moved on to St. Anthony’s Friary in Butler, N.J., to care for St. Francis Church in Wanaque, N.J., for five years. He was pastor and patron of St. Francis and established a rectory there. In 1956, he became chaplain at Paray Rest, Catskill, N.Y.

Fr. Urban died in Mercy Hospital in Buffalo June 6, 1959, one day before the anniversary of his ordination. He was 60 years old, a professed friar for 39 years and a parish priest and chaplain for 34 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
