Theophilus McNulty, OFM

1913 – 1991
Fr. Theophilus McNulty, OFM, was born Oct. 17, 1913 in St. Petersburg, Fla. After two years at St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y., he was received into the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1934, professing temporary vows one year later. Fr. Theophilus made his solemn profession in 1938 and was ordained in 1941.
His 50 years of ministry were spent mainly at St. Bonaventure University, Allegany, N.Y., as a professor, assistant, registrar and treasurer, and as a campus minister in the southern United States at the University of South Carolina, University of Georgia and Emory University, Atlanta. He also served at parishes in Lenoir, N.C., and Clarksville, Va. Fr. Theophilus spent two years in Shikoku, Japan, where he studied the Japanese language and culture in the hope of establishing a ministry for Japanese immigrants in Denver. His final years were spent at St. Bonaventure University.
He died on Jan. 25, 1991 at Holy Name Friary, Ringwood, N.J. Fr. Theophilus was 77 years old, a professed friar for 55 years and a priest for nearly 50 years.
