Fr. Sylvester Schmidt was born in Brackwede, Germany, on Oct. 13, 1878. He entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., on Dec. 24, 1896, and professed temporary vows Dec. 25, 1897. Fr. Sylvester made his profession of solemn vows Jan. 27, 1901, and was ordained a priest June 4, 1906.

He spent two years as an assistant in Paterson and died in Callicoon, N.Y., on June 8, 1908. He was 29 years old, a professed friar for 10 years and a priest for two years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
