Sylvan McGarrigle, OFM

1902 – 1977
Fr. Sylvan McGarrigle, OFM, was born on Nov. 19, 1902 in Philadelphia. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y., and entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1922. Fr. Sylvan professed temporary vows one year later, made his solemn profession in 1926 and was ordained in 1930.
A serious car accident one year after his ordination left his health impaired permanently and limited his activities. He served at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Brant Beach, N.J., St. Francis of Assisi Parish in New York City, and St. Patrick’s Friary in Buffalo, N.Y. He ministered for 30 years at St. Bonaventure Friary and in many parishes in North Jersey.
He died on Jan. 3, 1977 at the Lincoln Park, N.J., Nursing Home. Fr. Sylvan was 74 years old, a professed friar for 53 years and a priest for 46 years.
