Stanislaus Woywod

1880 – 1941

Fr. Stanislaus Woywod, OFM, was born in Guttstadt, Germany, on Aug. 10, 1880. He began his studies in Fulda and completed them in Obernburg, N.Y., before St. Joseph Seraphic Seminary was founded.

In 1899l, he entered the novitiate in 1899 at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., and professed simple vows in 1901. Fr. Stanislaus professed solemn vows in 1904 and was ordained a priest in 1906 at St. Bonaventure Church, Paterson.

Fr. Stanislaus studied canon law at St. Anthony’s in Rome from 1906 to 1909. He was assigned to teach canon law in Paterson and also served as guardian of the community for six years.

From 1920 to 1926, he taught at St. Bonaventure College in Allegany, N.Y. In 1930, he was appointed guardian of Holy Name College in Washington, D.C.

He was both editor and contributor to the Homiletic & Pastoral Review and wrote a Compendium of Canon Law. Fr. Stanislaus was a recognized international authority on canon law.

Fr. Stanislaus died Sept. 19, 1941, at St. Clare’s Hospital in New York City. He was 61 years old, a professed friar for 40 years and a priest for 35 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
