Fr. Solanus Dowling, OFM, was born Aug. 8, 1876 in Bansha, Ireland. He entered the Order in 1902, professing temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1906 and was ordained in 1909.

He served as prefect for a time at St. Bonaventure Seminary in Allegany, N.Y., before ministering as guardian of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in New York City. Fr. Solanus also did pastoral ministry in East Rutherford, N.J., and Denver.

He died on Feb. 16, 1935 in Denver. Fr. Solanus was 58 years old, a professed friar for 31 years and a priest for 25 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
