Simon Quigg, OFM

1902 – 1984

Fr. Simon Quigg, OFM, was born June 15, 1902 in Brooklyn, N.Y. After working for six years, he entered St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y. He was received into the novitiate in 1926, professing temporary vows one year later. Fr. Simon made his solemn profession in 1930 and was ordained in 1933.

One year later, he was appointed master of brothers and vicar of the St. Francis Friary, Brookline, Mass., community. Fr. Simon served as assistant novice master and vicar at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., master of clerics for five years at St. Anthony Friary, Butler, N.J., and assistant master of clerics at Holy Name College in Washington for six years.

In 1949, Fr. Simon was named guardian of the novitiate in Paterson, and when the novitiate moved to Lafayette, N.J., in 1955, he remained in Paterson as retreat director and vicar until 1958, when he was again named guardian. In 1966, Fr. Simon was appointed procurator and master of brothers at Holy Name College. After a lifetime in formation work, he went to Our Lady’s Chapel, New Bedford, Mass., where he served in pastoral ministry for eight years. In 1983, he transferred to the Provincial infirmary at St. Bonaventure University, Allegany, N.Y.

He died there on Jan. 28, 1984. Fr. Simon was 81 years old, a professed friar for 56 years and a priest for 50 years.
