Simeon Capizzi

1918 – 2001

Fr. Simeon Capizzi, OFM, was born on March 29, 1918 in Villalba, Sicily. His family immigrated to the United States and settled in Jamestown, N.Y. Fr. Simeon graduated from the University of Illinois in 1940 and served in the U.S. Army from 1841 to 1946. He entered the Order in 1947 at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.Y. One year later, he professed temporary vows and made his solemn profession in 1951. He was ordained two years later.

His first assignment was to St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, N.Y., where he taught math and, in time, became dean of discipline. From 1973 to 1976, he served as a missionary in Bolivia. Upon his return, he ministered briefly as a parochial vicar before becoming associate chaplain at St. Francis Hospital, Miami Beach, Fla., where he served for 14 years before retiring to St. Anthony Friary, St. Petersburg, Fla.

He died on Nov. 14, 2001 at the Maria Manor Nursing Home in St. Petersburg. Fr. Simeon was 83 years old, a professed Franciscan friar for 53 years and a priest for 48 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
