1913 – 1996

Fr. Sebastian Egan, OFM, was born Jan. 27, 1913 in Pittsfield, Mass. He earned a degree in foreign commerce from the University of Notre Dame and worked in that field for five years before attending St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y. He was received into the Order in 1940 at the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., professing temporary vows one year later. Fr. Sebastian made his solemn profession in 1944 and was ordained in 1945.

His first assignment was to St. Francis of Assisi Parish in New York City. Fr. Sebastian’s priestly career took him to the Province’s Mission Band, where he was based in Paterson, and the Western Mission Band, based in Denver. He returned to New York City and was appointed Provincial Treasurer from 1954 to 1965 before going to St. Bonaventure University, Allegany, N.Y., where he taught while serving as procurator of the friary.

Fr. Sebastian worked as chaplain at St. Francis Hospital in Olean, N.Y., and St. Francis Residence in Tampa, Fla. He was subsequently assigned to St. Francis Chapel in Providence, R.I., where he was a tconfessor for 14 years. He retired to St. Petersburg, Fla., for a short time, and then to Mount Alverno, Warwick, N.Y., and Holy Name Friary, Ringwood, N.J.

He died Feb. 22, 1996 at Holy Name Friary. Fr. Sebastian was 83 years old, a professed friar for 54 years and a priest for 50 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
