Romuald Gillen

1901 – 1949

Fr. Romuald Gillen, OFM, was born March 28, 1901 in Philadelphia. After graduating from St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y., he entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1922, professing temporary vows in 1923. Because of poor health, he spent the years between 1924 and 1936 in Colorado and New Mexico.

He made his solemn profession in 1926 and was ordained in 1931. Fr. Romuald spent many years of dedicated ministry at St. Joseph Parish, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and St. Francis of Assisi Parish in New York City.

He died on Feb. 8, 1949 in Hoboken, N.J. Fr. Romuald was 47 years old, a professed friar for 25 years and a priest for 17 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
