Fr. Robert Davis, OFM, was born in Kane, Pa., on Oct. 7, 1907. He became a Roman Catholic in his youth, and in 1926 he entered St. Bonaventure College, Allegany, N.Y. He graduated and began his theological studies at St. Bonaventure Seminary as a candidate for the Diocese of Erie, Pa.

In 1934, he was ordained a priest and served at parishes in Delancy, Meadville and Sharon. In 1941, Fr. Robert volunteered for military service. After the war was over, he was appointed pastor of St. Raphael’s Parish in Eldred, Pa., and cared for the missions of Sartwell and Duke Center.

For 16 years while he was pastor, the friars from St. Bonaventure University assisted him, and he became friends with many of them. Fr. Robert was a friendly, sincere and devout diocesan priest.

He entered the novitiate of Holy Name Province at St. Raphael’s Friary in Lafayette, N.J., in 1962, and professed temporary vows the following year. In 1966, Fr. Robert made his profession of solemn vows.

Fr. Robert ministered at St. Francis of Assisi Church on 31st Street for 13 years, dedicating himself to the ministry of convert instructions, inquiry classes and priests’ confessions. When sickness forced him to forego active ministry, he became chaplain at the Provincial Infirmary at St. Bonaventure University.

He died there on Aug. 21, 1978. Fr. Robert was 70 years old, a professed friar for 15 years and a priest for 44 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
