Remigius Fleishell

1894 – 1966

Fr. Remigius Fleishell, OFM, was born June 19, 1894 in Washington. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y., and was received into the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1918. Fr. Remigius professed temporary vows one year, made his solemn profession in 1922 and was ordained in 1925.

After ordination, Fr. Remigius did pastoral ministry in Totowa and Greenwood Lake, N.J. He served as assistant procurator at St. Bonaventure College, Allegany, N.Y., and cared for the parish in nearby Knapp Creek for nine years. From 1937 to 1942, he served as procurator at Holy Name College.

Fr. Remigius then spent 35 months in active duty overseas as a chaplain in the United States Army. He served in Africa, Italy, Corsica, France and Germany, and in 1945, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He later did pastoral ministry in Lenoir, N.C., Emporia, Va., and St. Anthony Shrine in Boston.

Fr. Remigius was visiting friends in Minnetonka, Minn., after attending a military reunion of the 501 Ordinance Battalion in Iowa when he died on March 30, 1966. He was 71 years old, a professed friar for 46 years and a priest for 40 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
