Pius Caruana

1911 – 1974

Br. Pius Caruana, OFM, was born on March 4, 1911 in Zeitun, Malta. He entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1950, professing temporary vows one year later. Br. Pius made his solemn profession in 1955.

He assisted in the kitchen and laundry at the novitiate in Paterson and St. Raphael Novitiate, Lafayette, N.J. Always available to help with sick members of the community, Br. Pius was a dedicated worker and a happy friar who had a perpetual smile on his face and a good word for everyone. His daily life was an echo of the simplicity and gentleness of Br. Juniper in the Little Flowers of St. Francis.

He died on Nov. 20, 1974 at St. Joseph Hospital in Paterson. Br. Pius was 63 years old, a professed friar for 23 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
