Philip Egan, OFM

1908 – 1964
Br. Philip Egan, OFM, was born in Manchester, N.H., on Sept. 2, 1908. He entered the Province’s novitiate at St. Bonaventure Frairy in Paterson, N.J., Nov. 19, 1933, professed temporary vows Nov. 21, 1934, and made his profession of solemn vows Jan. 8, 1938.
Br. Philip served in friaries in Croghan, N.Y., Butler and Paterson, N.J., Pensacola, Fla., Columbia, S.C., Boston, and Providence, R.I. He also served at Christ the King Seminary in Allegany, N.Y. He used his talents as an organist and played for High Masses and Benediction.
During his six-year stay at St. Francis Friary on 31st Street in New York City, he played the organ and served as a one-man choir for the numerous High Masses offered at St. Francis Church. Br. Philip was a friar whose optimistic outlook, cheerful disposition and serenity marked his entire Franciscan life.
He died while walking in Roger Williams Park near St. Francis Chapel in Providence, R.I., on July 23, 1964. Br. Philip was 55 years old and a professed friar for 29 years.
