Paschal Mueller, OFM

1817 – 1901

Br. Paschal Mueller, OFM, was born on Sept. 25, 1817 in Glaeserzell, Germany. He was received into the novitiate in Fulda, Germany, in 1842, professing temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1846.

Exiled during the Kulturkampf from his native country, Fr. Paschal spent four years with the Capuchin friars in Switzerland before coming to St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., with the original Fulda friars in 1876. He served the community faithfully until his death in the Paterson friary on Dec. 29, 1901. Br. Paschal was 84 years old, a professed friar for 58 years. He was the second friar to die after the establishment of the Province in 1901.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
