Deceased Friars
Norbert Christastie, OFM

1927 – 1974
Br. Norbert Christastie, OFM, was born on March 23, 1927 in Elmira, N.Y. He entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1950, professing temporary vows one year later. Br. Norbert made his solemn profession in 1954.
Nearly all of his Franciscan life was spent at St. Anthony Friary in Butler, N.J., where he served as cook and baker for the friars. Br. Norbert approached his cooking as an art and developed the skills of a true chef. He enjoyed his work in the kitchen and became a model of simplicity and joyfulness for the theology students whom he fed daily.
He died on March 20, 1974 at St. Anthony Friary. Br. Norbert was 46 years old, a professed friar for 22 years.
