Maurice Scheier

1901 – 1991

Fr. Maurice Scheier, OFM, was born on Dec. 15, 1901 in Allegany, N.Y. He entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1920, professing temporary vows one year later. Fr. Maurice made his solemn profession in 1924 and was ordained in 1927.

He spent almost his entire life at St. Bonaventure University, Allegany, N.Y. One year after his ordination, he went to SBU as an instructor, remaining there until 1986. During his tenure, he served as professor of mathematics, head of the math department, dean of science, and vicar and guardian of the friary from 1952 to 1958.

While a full professor, he became pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in nearby Knapp Creek, where he served for 25 years.

He died on March 12, 1991 in Olean, N.Y. Fr. Maurice was 89 years old, a professed friar for 69 years and a priest for 63 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
