Br. Matthew Ummenhofer, OFM, was born in Herbertingen, Germany, on May 3, 1906. He entered the novitiate in Fulda on July 30, 1927, and professed temporary vows Aug. 1, 1928.

He came to the United States in 1929, made his profession of solemn vows Aug. 18, 1931, and served as a dedicated and hardworking friar at St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York City for 22 years.

He suffered a heart attack in the church and died on June 21, 1951. He was 45 years old and a professed friar for 22 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
