Martin Buergel, OFM

Br. Martin Buergel, OFM, was born at Littau, Austria, on Feb. 2, 1870.

He was received into the Province’s novitiate on Oct. 19, 1899, professed temporary vows Oct. 23, 1900, and made his solemn profession of vows March 11, 1904.

During his years as a friar, Br. Martin served as a cook at St. Anthony’s Friary in Butler, N.J., and St. Stephen’s Friary in Croghan, N.Y., for more than 30 years.

Br. Martin died in Obernburg, N.Y., on Aug. 1, 1934. He was 64 years old and a professed friar for 33 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
