Fr. Mark Smith, OFM, was born on Nov. 21, 1929 in Medford, Mass. He entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1954, professing temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1958 and was ordained in 1961.

His first assignment was to Boston for one year. For the next 10 years, Fr. Mark served as a missionary in Brazil. When he returned to the United States, he served as a hospital chaplain in Florida and New Jersey. He then returned to Boston, where he ministered as vicar of St. Anthony Shrine for three years.

He died on Jan. 5, 1997 at New England Medical Center in Boston. Fr. Mark was 67 years old, a professed friar for 41 years and a priest for 35 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
