1937 – 2004

Br. Mark Murphy, OFM, was born Jan. 13, 1937 in New York City and baptized Daniel Francis. He was received as a Tertiary Brother in 1964 and entered the Order in 1965. He professed temporary vows one year later and made his solemn profession in 1970.

He served at St. Francis Friary, New York City. From 1970 to 1976, Br. Mark was a member of the vocation team and worked in the Provincialate. He then served as associate promoter of the missions. After a year’s sabbatical at the Washington Theological Union, Br. Mark served as secretary to the rector and guardian at St. Anthony Shrine, Boston, and became guestmaster in 2000. He transferred to St. Anthony Friary, St. Petersburg, Fla., and moved again to Holy Name Friary, Ringwood, N.J., in 2004.

He died there on April 20, 2004. Br. Mark was 67 years old, a professed friar for 37 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
