Leopold Meszaros, OFM

Leopold Meszaros

1920 – 1973

Fr. Leopold Meszaros, OFM, was born on July 21, 1920 in New York City. He entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1941 and professed temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1945 and was ordained in 1947.

Except for one year of ministry at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Manhattan, Fr. Leopold spent his Franciscan life serving as an assistant at St. Stephen of Hungary Parish on the Upper East Side. He had grown up across the street from St. Stephen’s and returned to his home parish as a young priest. Because of his Hungarian background and language abilities, he was able to serve the Hungarian community as well as the English-speaking parishioners.

He died on April 12, 1973 in New Jersey. Fr. Leopold was 52 years old, a professed friar for 30 years and a priest for 25 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
