Justus Fluegel

1874 – 1952

Br. Justus Fluegel, OFM, was born on Nov. 6, 1874 in Fulda, Germany. He was received into the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., in 1901, professing temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1905.

His entire Franciscan life was spent ministering at St. Joseph Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y., where he was an inspiration to friars and seminarians alike. Br. Justus worked on the farm and in the gardens until his death. His life was marked by an ethic of hard work, prayer, and genuine simplicity of life.

He died on Oct. 30, 1952 at St. Joseph Seraphic Seminary. Br. Justus was almost 78 years of age, and had just celebrated the golden jubilee of his profession in May.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
