Justin Hiltermann

1838 – 1911

Fr. Justin Hiltermann, OFM, was born Dec. 18, 1838 in Glandorf, Germany. He entered the Province of Holy Cross, Saxonia, in 1858, professing temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1862 and was ordained in 1865.

He transferred to the Fulda Province to teach philosophy. Exiled from Germany during the Kulturkampf, Fr. Justin preached missions in France and eventually came to America, where he taught philosophy and theology at the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., until his death. Fr. Justin was a lector jubilatus of the Order.

He died Feb. 23, 1911 at St. Michael’s Hospital, Newark, N.J. Fr. Justin was 72 years old, a professed friar for 51 years and a priest for 45 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
