Julian Buechel, OFM

1840 – 1919

Br. Julian Buechel, OFM, was born in Motzlar, Germany, on May 11, 1840. He received the Franciscan habit in Fulda Nov. 25, 1874, and was among those exiled during the Kulturkampf.

He came to America with Fr. Francis Koch, OFM, and was a member of the first Franciscan community in Paterson, N.J. Br. Julian professed temporary vows there March 19, 1876. His solemn profession took place on March 19, 1879.

Julian served the Province faithfully until his death in Denver on May 20, 1919. He was 79 years old and a professed friar for 43 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
