Joseph Reilly

1928 – 1990

Br. Joseph (Aloysius) Reilly, OFM, was born on June 3, 1928 in Newark, N.J. After serving in the United States Navy, he entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1952, professing temporary vows one year later. Br. Joseph made his solemn profession in 1956.

For 25 years, he worked faithfully in the kitchens of our friaries in New York City, Providence, R.I., Rye Beach, N.H., and Paterson. In 1980, he became vicar and associate director of the Franciscan Retreat Center in Paterson, and in 1983, he was asked to serve as coordinator-supervisor of the friary at St. Bonaventure University, Allegany, N.Y.

He died March 1, 1990 at St. Francis Hospital in Olean, N.Y. Br. Joseph was 61 years old, a professed friar for 36 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
