Deceased Friars

Joseph Albiol, OFM

Joseph Albiol

1908 – 1971

Fr. Joseph Albiol, OFM, was born May 31, 1908 in Villarreal, Spain. He was a member of the St. Salvator Province in Spain, but is remembered by Holy Name Province because of his 12 years of exemplary ministry as a confessor at St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York City, and the fond memories friars have for him.

He entered the Order in 1923 and was ordained in 1931. For many years, Fr. Joseph ministered in Spain and as a missionary in Chile for 15 years. “Padre Jose” came to St. Francis in 1958 and for 12 years was a model of availability to all. No matter how often he was called to the parlor, he responded with a smile. As a confessor, he had a great following among the Italians and Spanish-speaking people.

He died on April 29, 1971 at a Franciscan friary in Spain. Fr. Joseph was 63 years old, a professed friar for 46 years and a priest for 39 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
