John T. Piccione

1964 – 2009

Fr. John Piccione, OFM, was born Sept. 25, 1964 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from Siena College, Loudonville, N.Y., in 1986, and after graduation, spent two years working for Catholic Charities at Bishop Boardman Apartments in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was received into the Order in 1989 in Brookline, Mass., professing temporary vows one year later. Fr. John made his solemn profession in 1994 and was ordained in 1995.

His first assignment was at St. Bonaventure Parish, Paterson, N.J., where he served as parochial vicar for four years and pastor for six years. Fr. John ministered as chaplain for the fire departments of Paterson and West Paterson, the New Jersey Honor Legion and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office. He was affectionately known as “the Padre.”

In 2005, Fr. John became director of development for Holy Name Province. He also became director of St. Anthony’s Guild in East Rutherford, N.J., and was appointed guardian of Sacred Heart Friary in East Rutherford, N.J. He was elected to serve on the board of directors of the National Catholic Development Conference.

He died on Feb. 22, 2009 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Fr. John was 44 years old, a professed friar for 18 years and a priest for 13 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
