Br. John Nichols, OFM, was born on Jan. 27, 1918 in New York City. He entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., in 1941, and professed temporary vows one year later. Br. John made his solemn profession in 1945.

An extraordinarily good Franciscan brother and cook, Br. John served in various friaries throughout Holy Name Province. He was diligent, patient, and unselfish. Though he never enjoyed robust health himself, he gave his time and energies to the sick and infirm of the community.

He died on Nov. 7, 1974 at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J. Br. John was 56 years old, a professed friar for 32 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
