Br. Jerome O’Connell, OFM, was born July 1, 1841 in Newcastle, Ireland. He was received into the novitiate at St. Bonaventure’s College and Seminary in Allegany, N.Y., in 1881 and professed temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1885.

He was among the pioneer Allegany brothers and assisted the friars for 34 years by working on the farm, teaching catechism to children on Sundays, and driving the priests to their missions and visits to the ill.

Br. Jerome died on April 2, 1915 at St. Bonaventure’s. He was 73 years old, a professed friar for 32 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
