Ildefonse Gillogly

1909 – 1980

Fr. Ildefonse Gillogly, OFM, was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on Oct. 14, 1909. His family were members of St. Patrick’s Parish where the friars served. In 1921, he entered St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y., with his brother.

He was received into the Province’s novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., in 1926 and professed temporary vows the following year. In 1930, Fr. Ildefonse made his profession of solemn vows in 1930 and was ordained a priest in 1933.

Fr. Ildefonse’s first assignment was to the seminary in Callicoon, where he taught Greek and English and cared for the mission church in Youngsville. After eight years in Sullivan County, he was assigned pastor of St. Francis Parish in Lenoir, N.C. Seven years later he became pastor of Holy Name Church in Garfield, N.J., where he built the school and convent.

From 1958 to 1964, Fr. Ildefonse was the guardian and pastor of St. Joseph’s in Winsted, Conn. For three years he served as chaplain at the Caritas Institute of Health in Tampa, Fla., and then returned north to serve as an assistant in Wanaque and Butler, N.J.

Fr. Ildefonse was a zealous pastor, highly organized and extremely conscientious. He died at St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville, N.J., on Aug. 13, 1980. He was 70 years of old, a professed friar for 53 years and a priest for 47 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
