Humble Butler, OFM

1834 – 1910

Br. Humble Butler, OFM, was born on June 7, 1834 in Barnalisheen, Ireland. He was one of the old pioneer Allegany, N.Y., brothers. He entered the Order in Allegany in 1864, professing temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1868.

Except for a few years, his long Franciscan life was spent at St. Bonaventure College, Allegany, as a farmer and a sacristan. He died on Nov. 28, 1910 in New York City. Br. Humble was 76 years old, a professed friar for 45 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
