Deceased Friars

Hilary Reinhold, OFM

Hilary Reinhold

1869 – 1928

Fr. Hilary Reinhold, OFM, was born on Dec. 16, 1869 in Beuren, Germany. He entered the novitiate in 1889, professing temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1892 and was ordained in 1893.

He served Holy Name Province well. Fr. Hilary ministered as guardian at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., and St. Stephen Friary, Croghan, N.Y., and was the first Franciscan pastor at St. Joseph Parish in East Rutherford, N.J. He also served as a Provincial Councilor several times.

Fr. Hilary had a great sense for organization. He practically rebuilt the parish in East Rutherford, and the Italian Romanesque church was his dream for the parish, a dream fulfilled in 1930. He initiated the first Mass for the Catholics in Clifton, N.J.

He died on Nov. 28, 1928 in New York City. Fr. Hilary was 58 years old, a professed friar for 38 years and a priest for 35 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
