1914 – 2005

Br. Gilbert McEvoy, OFM, was born on April 19, 1914 in the Bronx, N.Y., and baptized Stephen. He was received into the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1936 and professed simple vows one year later. Br. Gilbert made his solemn profession in 1941.

He served in many communities around Holy Name Province, including St. Francis of Assisi Parish, New York City, St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., Holy Cross Friary in the Bronx, St. Joseph Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y., St. Stephen’s Friary in New York City, St. Francis Friary in Beach Haven, N.J., St. Joseph Friary in Winsted, Conn., St. Patrick’s Friary in Buffalo, N.Y., and St. Francis Seminary in Rye Beach, N.H.

From 1963 to 1966, Br. Gilbert served at Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, N.Y. He then began a 28-year stay at St. Anthony Shrine in Boston. In 1994, he moved to Holy Name Friary in Ringwood, N.J.

He died on Oct. 18, 2005 at Holy Name Friary. Br. Gilbert was 91 years old, a professed friar for 68 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
