1893 – 1956

Fr. Gerard McGlynn, OFM, was born Sept. 11, 1893 in Philadelphia. He entered St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y., in 1910 and was received into the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1915. He professed temporary vows one year later, made his solemn profession in 1919 and was ordained in 1922.

He went to the Callicoon seminary to teach Latin and Greek, and cared for the mission churches in nearby Yulan and Highland Lake, N.Y. Fr. Gerard served as guardian in Callicoon for three years. In 1937, he was elected to be a Provincial Councilor and was appointed to serve as master of novices in Paterson. For nine years, Fr. Gerard was responsible for the spiritual formation of novices and he enjoyed “teaching them to stand on their own feet.” He did pastoral ministry at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, New York City, and was in demand as a retreat master. His final ministry was as chaplain at Paray Rest, Catskill, N.Y.

He died on Jan. 31, 1956 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in New York City. Fr. Gerard was 62 years old, a professed friar for 39 years and a priest for 33 years.
