Br. Gerald Hudson, OFM, was born on May 6, 1942 in Southwick, Idaho. Before joining the Order, he served in the United States Navy, earned two bachelor’s degrees, taught at a public school and became superintendent of a residential facility in Delaware for troubled children. A convert, he was baptized in 1982 in Dover, Del. Br. Gerald was received into the Order in 1985 at St. Francis Friary, Brookline, Mass. He professed simple vows one year later and made his solemn profession in 1990.

From 1990 to 1995, he served as a missionary in Jamaica and, from 1995 to 2002, Br. Gerald ministered at Holy Name of Jesus Parish in New York City. He also was in charge of the parish thrift store and taught English as a second language at St. Michael Episcopal Church. From 2002 to 2004, he served at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Raleigh, N.C. For the next two years, he served at St. Mary’s Parish in Anderson, S.C. In 2006, he moved to St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Camden, N.J., where he ministered until his death.

He died there on March 2, 2010. Br. Gerald was 67 years old, a professed friar for 23 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
