George Skelly

1892 – 1935

Fr. George Skelly, OFM, was born in New York City on May 2, 1892. In 1910, he graduated from St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y., and entered the Province’s novitiate.

He professed temporary vows in 1911 and solemn vows in 1914. In 1917, Fr. George was ordained a priest.

Fr. George devoted his entire Franciscan life to St. Bonaventure College and Seminary in Allegany, N.Y., where he served as a confessor and spiritual director.

He died in Allegany on Aug. 7, 1933. Fr. George was 41 years old, a professed friar for almost 22 years and a priest for 16 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
