Frederic A. Musser

1924 – 2007

Br. Frederic A. Musser, OFM, was born on Dec. 27, 1924, in Atlantic City, N.J.

In 1942, Br. Frederic was invested as a tertiary brother and received into the Franciscan Order in 1944 at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J. The following year, he professed first vows there. Br. Freddie professed final vows in 1948 at Holy Name College, Washington, D.C.

While in Paterson, he served as sacristan. In 1950, Br. Freddie volunteered for the Brazilian Mission, where he served until 1973. When he returned to the United States, he assumed the duties of porter and sacristan at St. Francis of Assisi Church on West 31st Street in New York City. He also worked at Our Lady’s Chapel in New Bedford, Mass. From 1977 until 2002, Br. Freddie was sacristan at St. Anthony Shrine in Boston, then transferred to nearby St. Anthony Residence.

Although Br. Freddie was never ordained, he was considered a vital part of the shrine’s sacramental ministry by his fellow friars.

He died March 3, 2007, at St. Anthony Residence. Br. Freddie was 82 years old and a professed friar for 61 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
