Francis Regis Flynn

1918 – 1976

Br. Francis Regis Flynn, OFM, was born on Jan. 25, 1918 in Buffalo, N.Y. He graduated from Canisius High School before entering the Order. He was received as tertiary brother in 1935 and entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., in 1936, professing temporary vows one year later. He professed solemn vows in 1940.

During his years of temporary vows at Paterson and for three years after, Br. Regis worked as a painter in the friary and assisted in the book bindery until 1943. He was then assigned to St. Joseph Friary in East Rutherford, N.J., where he served faithfully as porter and custodian. Br. Regis also served at St. Francis Friary in New York City for nine years.

Other assignments took him back to Paterson, and to St. Stephen Friary in New York City. In 1958, he was assigned to St. Bonaventure Friary in Allegany, N.Y.

He died there on Nov. 23, 1976. Br. Regis was 58 years old, a professed friar for 39 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
