Francis Coen, OFM
1835 – 1908
Fr. Francis Coen, OFM, was born June 26, 1835 in Galway, Ireland. He entered the Order in 1854, professing temporary vows one year later. Fr. Francis made his solemn profession in 1856. He studied at the Irish College of St. Isidore’s in Rome and participated in the ceremonies that accompanied the promulgation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854.
He joined the Custody of the Immaculate Conception at St. Bonaventure’s College, Allegany, N.Y., in 1878 and was ordained in 1859. Fr. Francis was one of the first friars associated with St. Joseph’s Parish, Winsted, Conn., but the greater part of his Franciscan life was spent at St. Bonaventure’s, where he was known as a kind and gentle professor for nearly 30 years.
He died on April 23, 1908 in Allegany. Fr. Francis was 72 years old, a professed friar for 53 years and a priest for 29 years.
